As part of the Hon'ble Chancellor's Birthday Celebrations, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), under the aegis of Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA), in association with the Department of Community Medicine, SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, successfully organized the first Free Medical Camp at Karunilam Village on 05 August 2026. The camp marked the beginning of a series of eight free medical camps planned across the adopted villages of SRMIST to provide accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare services to rural communities.

The inaugural programme was attended by Mr. Shankar, President, Karunilam Village Panchayat; Mr. Mohan, Panchayat Secretary; Dr. V. Thirumurugan, Associate Director (Campus Life) and Nodal Officer, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA), SRMIST; and Dr. Lakshminarayanan, Assistant Professor, Networking and Communications NWC), School of Computing, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST).

A multidisciplinary team of doctors from various specialties of SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, headed by Dr. Shakthi Chakravarthi, rendered comprehensive healthcare services to the villagers. The medical team comprised specialists from General Medicine, General Surgery, ENT, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Pediatrics, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Psychiatry, and Audiology, ensuring holistic medical care for people of all age groups.
The camp offered a comprehensive range of free healthcare services, including general and specialist medical consultations, height and weight measurement, blood pressure (BP) monitoring, blood sugar testing, basic blood investigations, health screening, health education, and distribution of essential medicines. Eye examinations were also conducted for beneficiaries requiring ophthalmic evaluation, while patients identified with conditions requiring advanced medical care were counselled and referred to SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre for further treatment and follow-up.
Students of the Tamil Perayan Paari Manavar Narpani Mandram actively volunteered throughout the programme by assisting in beneficiary registration, patient guidance, queue management, documentation, and coordination of various camp activities, contributing significantly to the smooth and efficient conduct of the medical camp.
The medical camp received an overwhelming response from the local community, with more than 200 villagers benefiting from the free consultations, diagnostic services, health screening, and medicines. The initiative also played a vital role in promoting preventive healthcare, early detection of diseases, and awareness of healthy lifestyle practices among the rural population.
The Free Medical Camp Series, organized as part of the Hon'ble Chancellor's Birthday Celebrations, will continue throughout August 2026 in the adopted villages of Pulippakkam, Guruvambedu, Athur, Chettipuniyam, Kolathur, Anjur, and Old Perungalathur. Beneficiaries attending these camps will receive comprehensive medical services, and eligible participants will also be presented with commemorative gifts as part of the celebrations.
The programme stands as a testament to SRMIST's enduring commitment to inclusive healthcare, social responsibility, and nation-building through the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, bringing quality medical services closer to underserved communities and enhancing the health and well-being of rural citizens.
