    SRMIST ORHANISES ‘GATEWAY FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS – LEADERSHIP DEMAND AND SRMIST SOCIAL RESPONBILITY’

     “Transforming our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”, build on the successes of the Millennium Development Goals, cover social and economic development issues including poverty, hunger, health, education, global warming, gender equality, water, sanitation, energy, urbanization, environment, and social justice, while including new areas such as climate change, economic inequality, innovation, sustainable consumption, peace, and justice, among other priorities. Some of the ambitious schemes and programmes of the Government of India are designed to achieve these SDGs. One such Central Government scheme is Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, a flagship programme under Ministry of Human Resource Development aimed at transforming Rural India.
    At SRM Institute of Science Technology, the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan cell, Center for Environmental Nuclear Research and School of Public Health jointly organised a Seminar and Poster presentation “Gateway to Sustainable Development Goals – Leadership Demand and SRMIST Social Responsibility” on 29th March 2019 at Dr. Vikhram Sarabhai hall, 4th floor University Building. Dr. Rajan Patil, Associate Professor, School of Public Health delivered the welcome address.
    The event was graced by honourable Vice Chancellor, Dr. Sandeep Sancheti. In his inaugural address, he emphasised on the need for an open elective course to educate students on the importance of SDGs. In his opinion, of the 17 goals, he stressed on the importance of ‘Goal 4 Quality Education’ which acts as an overarching goal and is the ‘seed’ to achieving the other interconnected goals. He encouraged students to come up with innovative ideas and become experts in knowing the people and local conditions well, which is the key to social interventions. He concluded his speech appreciating the multi-faculty and multi-disciplinary coordination of the Departments involved.

    The chief guest was Ms. Rajalakshmi Srinivasan, Product Manager, ZOHO Estancia IT Park Ltd. Having worked with Zoho for 19 years, she shared some of their best practices which aligns with the objectives of SDGs and other CSR activities undertaken towards community and rural development.
    Prof. Kantha Deivi Arunachalam, Dean, Center for Environmental Nuclear Research presented SRMIST’s ranking in UI Green Metric securing 3rd in Deemed to be University (India level), 9th ranking out of 25 Indian Universities participations and 392th ranking out of 719 Institutes worldwide.
    Dr. Padma Venkat, Dean School of Public Health enlightened the audience about the importance of Sustainable Health. 
    Dr.V.Thirumurugan, Associate Director (Campus Life) and UBA Coordinator and Ms.Irene Sambath, UBA Project Associate presented the updates of activities at UBA adopted villages. 
    The 1st year students from Master in Public Health presented on SDGs and Planetary Health. 
    The Chief Guest, Ms. Rajalakshmi and Mr. Udhay Kumar Thiyagarajan from DXC Technology Solution Architec were the judges for the competitions
    Dr. T.M. Thiyagarajan, Dean from Agricultural Sciences gave prizes for best three posters and oral presentations. 
    Dr. Rajan Patil, Associate Professor, SPH proposed the vote of thanks.

  • STUDENT CHAPTER OF 'ENACTUS SRM' VISIT ANJUR

    STUDENT CHAPTER OF 'ENACTUS SRM' VISIT ANJUR

    A team of 26 enthusiastic students from different streams of Engineering and Business Management from SRM Institute of Science & Technology, Kattankulathur campus visited one of the UBA adopted villages, Anjur in Kattankulathur block on 1st March 2019. These students are also volunteers of Non-Profit Organization Enactus SRM, which is the student chapter of the Enactus Global Org.
    The students split into groups, with each group having a Tamil-speaking student and visited the community of Scheduled Tribes, spoke to the villagers, listened to their problems. 
    They observed the living and sanitary conditions of the people, randomly visited those house above poverty line to find out if they have toilets built inside their houses. 
    They also spent a good time with students at the Government Primary School. 
    The School’s Management presented a list of items, such as sports items, furniture and other amenities that require renovation and repair.
