1. Event Overview

As part of Special Campaign 6.0, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan – SRMIST (UBA-SRMIST), in association with Maraimalai Nagar Municipality, organised a Massive Tree Plantation Drive at GK Nagar Park and the adjoining lake bund, Kattankulathur, on 26 September 2026.

The initiative was undertaken with the objective of enhancing green cover, strengthening the ecological environment around the waterbody, promoting biodiversity and encouraging active participation of the SRMIST community in environmental conservation and community development.

More than 1,000 native and indigenous tree saplings were planted during the drive. The species included Magizham, Naval, Vembu, Neer Maruthu, Pungan, Kadambam, Sephthodiya, Mantharai and Poovarasu.

2. Participation

The plantation drive witnessed enthusiastic participation from more than 120 participants, including:

Students of SRMIST
Faculty members
Maintenance staff
Transport staff
Officials and personnel of Maraimalai Nagar Municipality

The active involvement of students and faculty members provided an opportunity for the SRMIST community to contribute directly to a meaningful environmental initiative.

3. Inauguration and Dignitaries

The programme was inaugurated by Mrs. Latha, Commissioner, Maraimalai Nagar Municipality.

The event was organised and presided over by Dr. V. Thirumurugan, Associate Director – Campus Life, SRMIST and Nodal Officer – UBA-SRMIST.

4. Environmental Significance

The plantation activity at the park and lake bund was aimed at increasing green cover and improving the ecological environment surrounding the waterbody. The planting of native and indigenous species will contribute to supporting local biodiversity and creating a greener public space for the community.

The initiative is aligned with relevant United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:

SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being
SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities
SDG 13 – Climate Action
SDG 15 – Life on Land

5. Institutional and Community Support

The successful conduct of the plantation drive was made possible through the valuable support and coordination of various departments and stakeholders.

UBA-SRMIST places on record its sincere gratitude to the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor and the Registrar, SRMIST, for granting the necessary approval and extending their support for organising the programme. Their encouragement enabled UBA-SRMIST to undertake this community-oriented environmental initiative in collaboration with the local civic administration.

UBA-SRMIST also sincerely thanks the SRMIST Transport Department for providing buses and facilitating the safe and convenient transportation of students and staff to the plantation venue.

Special appreciation is extended to the SRMIST Canteen Team for making arrangements for breakfast, tea and snacks for the participating students, faculty and staff. Their timely support contributed significantly to the smooth conduct of the programme.

UBA-SRMIST further acknowledges the cooperation and support extended by the Maraimalai Nagar Municipality, particularly its officials and field personnel, for coordinating and supporting the plantation activity at GK Nagar.

6. Acknowledgement to Participants

UBA-SRMIST sincerely appreciates the enthusiastic participation of all students, faculty members, maintenance staff, transport staff and municipal personnel who contributed their time and effort to the plantation drive.

The participation of more than 120 members and the planting of 1,000+ saplings demonstrate the value of collective action in addressing environmental challenges and strengthening institution–community partnerships.

7. Conclusion

The Massive Tree Plantation Drive at GK Nagar Park and the adjoining lake bund was successfully conducted through the collaborative efforts of UBA-SRMIST, Maraimalai Nagar Municipality and the SRMIST community.

The initiative not only contributed to increasing the green cover of the locality but also provided students and staff with an opportunity to participate in a practical, community-oriented environmental activity.

UBA-SRMIST remains committed to continuing such initiatives in partnership with local communities and civic authorities towards environmental conservation, sustainable development and community empowerment.
