SRMIST Conducts Coastal Cleanup Drive at Kovalam Beach

 

Kovalam, September 19:
Marking International Coastal Cleanup Day, the Department of Civil Engineering, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), with the support of the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), in association with Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA), SRMIST, conducted a special coastal cleanup drive at Kovalam Beach.

The event was inaugurated by Mrs. J. Sobana Thangam Sundar, President, Kovalam Village Panchayat. Mr. Gokulan, Head, Southern Region Lions Club, delivered a special address. The programme was led by Dr. V. Thirumurugan, Associate Director & Nodal Officer – Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, SRMIST.

The event was coordinated and organised by Dr. R. Nagalakshmi, Associate Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, SRMIST.

Held from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., the cleanup drive witnessed enthusiastic participation from more than 110 SRMIST students and faculty members. The participants collected various types of waste found along the shoreline, segregated the collected waste and handed it over to the Kovalam Village Panchayat President for proper disposal.

At the conclusion of the programme, students, faculty members and participants took an Environmental Protection Pledge, reaffirming their commitment to protecting coastal and marine ecosystems, maintaining clean beaches and preventing plastic pollution.

The initiative highlighted the importance of protecting coastal ecosystems, reducing marine pollution and creating greater environmental responsibility among the public.

The initiative aligns with the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) and reflects SRMIST’s continued commitment to environmental sustainability and social responsibility:
