Maraimalai Nagar, June 3, 2026:
In response to the call of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the nationwide "Plant4Mother – Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam (EPMKN)" campaign, the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA-SRMIST) and the Centre for Research in Environment, Sustainability Advocacy and Climate Change (REACH), SRMIST, jointly organized a tree plantation programme on 03 June 2026 in the Maraimalai Nagar Municipal area.
The Plant4Mother campaign encourages citizens to plant a tree in honour of their mothers while contributing to environmental conservation and sustainable development. The initiative has inspired educational institutions across the country to undertake plantation activities and strengthen environmental awareness among students and communities.
As part of this programme, 100 tree saplings were arranged by UBA-SRMIST and planted by SRMIST student volunteers at selected locations within the municipal area. The plantation drive aimed to enhance green cover, promote environmental stewardship, and encourage community participation in ecological conservation.
The programme was conducted in the presence of Mr. Sivamurugan, Sanitary Inspector, Maraimalai Nagar Municipality, and Dr. Bhuvaneswari, Municipal Health Officer, who appreciated the enthusiastic participation of the students and highlighted the importance of collective efforts in protecting the environment and creating greener urban spaces.
The event was coordinated under the guidance of Dr. V. Thirumurugan, Associate Director (Campus Life), Coordinator–Environmental Management System (EMS), and Nodal Officer, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA-SRMIST). Addressing the participants, he emphasized the significance of the Plant4Mother – Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign and encouraged students to nurture the planted saplings, ensuring their survival and growth for the benefit of future generations.
The plantation drive reflects SRMIST's continued commitment to environmental sustainability, community engagement, and the successful implementation of national initiatives promoting ecological conservation. The programme served as a meaningful tribute to mothers while fostering a greener, healthier, and more sustainable future for society.
