World Environment Day 2026 Celebrated at Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Guduvanchery

The Department of Civil Engineering, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), Kattankulathur, successfully organized a World Environment Day 2026 celebration on 05 June 2026 at Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Nandivaram, Guduvanchery, under the global theme “Beat Plastic Pollution.”

The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Thirumurugan V., Associate Director (Campus Life), SRMIST-KTR, who served as the Chief Guest. In his keynote address, he emphasized the urgent need to reduce plastic consumption, protect natural resources, and promote environmental sustainability through collective action. He encouraged students to actively participate in environmental conservation initiatives and adopt eco-friendly practices in their daily lives.

The Headmaster of the school addressed the gathering and highlighted the harmful impacts of plastic pollution on ecosystems, biodiversity, and human health. He urged students to become responsible citizens by contributing to a cleaner and greener environment.

A major highlight of the programme was the Tree Plantation Drive conducted within the school premises. As part of the initiative, saplings were distributed to all participating students to encourage tree planting and environmental stewardship. Students were also informed about the plantation initiatives promoted under the vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, emphasizing the importance of increasing green cover and building a sustainable future. The message conveyed was that every tree planted today contributes to a healthier environment for future generations.

To foster environmental awareness and creativity among students, Drawing and Speech Competitions were organized on themes related to environmental conservation, plastic pollution, and sustainable living. The competitions witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, and prizes were awarded to the winners in recognition of their outstanding performances.

An Environmental Awareness Session was also conducted to educate students on plastic pollution, waste management, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable lifestyle practices. The programme received an overwhelming response from students, teachers, and school authorities and successfully achieved its objective of promoting environmental responsibility among young learners.

The event was coordinated by Dr. R. Nagalakshmi, Associate Professor, Dr. M. Bhuvaneshwari, Assistant Professor, Dr. P. Krithika, Assistant Professor, and Mr. Saichand V., Research Scholar, from the Department of Civil Engineering, SRMIST, Kattankulathur.
