UBA–SRMIST Celebrates International Yoga Day 2026 at Anjur Village

The Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) Cell of SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), in association with the Directorate of Sports, successfully organized an International Yoga Day 2026 celebration at Anjur Village, one of the villages adopted under the UBA-SRMIST initiative.
The programme was conducted in line with the guidelines of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and focused on this year’s International Yoga Day theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.” The theme emphasizes yoga’s transformative role in helping people of all ages maintain physical vitality, mental well-being, independence, and mobility while addressing the challenges associated with an aging global population.
Around 50 village residents enthusiastically participated in the event, which aimed to create awareness about the importance of yoga in promoting a healthy lifestyle and enhancing overall well-being. The programme brought together villagers of different age groups to experience the benefits of yoga through guided practice and interactive learning.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. V. Thirumurugan, Associate Director (Campus Life) and Nodal Officer, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, SRMIST, highlighted the significance of yoga in maintaining physical fitness, mental peace, and emotional resilience. He emphasized that regular yoga practice can help prevent lifestyle-related diseases, reduce stress, improve flexibility, and contribute to healthy ageing. He encouraged the villagers to incorporate yoga into their daily routine and embrace a healthier and more balanced lifestyle.
Dr. Mohanakrishnan, Director of Sports, SRMIST, delivered the special address and emphasized the importance of integrating yoga into everyday life to achieve physical fitness, mental clarity, and emotional well-being. He noted that yoga is a timeless practice that strengthens the body, calms the mind, and enhances overall wellness. Referring to the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” he encouraged participants to make yoga a lifelong habit to maintain vitality, independence, and quality of life.
Students from the Directorate of Sports, SRMIST, conducted practical demonstrations of various yoga asanas, pranayama techniques, and relaxation exercises. The students systematically explained the benefits and correct methods of performing each posture, enabling participants to practice yoga safely and effectively. The session witnessed active participation and generated considerable interest among the villagers.
The villagers enthusiastically joined the yoga session and appreciated the efforts of SRMIST in bringing health and wellness awareness programmes to the rural community. The event provided an opportunity for participants to learn simple yoga practices that can be incorporated into their daily routines to improve physical and mental health.
As a token of appreciation and to commemorate the occasion, T-shirts were distributed to all participants. The gesture was warmly received and added enthusiasm to the celebration.
The programme successfully created awareness about the benefits of yoga and reinforced SRMIST’s commitment to community engagement, rural development, and holistic well-being through the activities of Unnat Bharat Abhiyan. The event also strengthened the bond between the university and the local community by promoting health, wellness, and social development at the grassroots level.
The celebration concluded with a collective pledge by participants to practice yoga regularly and spread awareness about its benefits among family members and fellow villagers, thereby contributing to healthier families and communities.
