SRMIST Joins Hands with Maraimalai Nagar Municipality for World Environment Day Tree Plantation Drive

Kattankulathur, June 5, 2026:

In observance of World Environment Day 2026, the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA), Campus Life and Environmental initiatives of SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), in association with Maraimalai Nagar Municipality, organized a tree plantation drive along the Kambar Salai Lake Walkway at Maraimalai Nagar.

As part of the initiative, 100 Mahogany saplings and 50 Bamboo saplings were planted to strengthen the green cover surrounding the lake ecosystem and contribute to environmental sustainability.

The plantation drive was inaugurated by Mr. Narayanan, Commissioner, Maraimalai Nagar Municipality. The event was attended by Dr. R. Mohana Krishnan, Director of Sports, SRMIST; Dr. V. Thirumurugan, Associate Director (Campus Life) and Nodal Officer, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA-SRMIST); Mr. Shanmugam, Chairman, Maraimalai Nagar Municipality; Mrs. Chitra Kamalakannan, Vice-Chairperson, Maraimalai Nagar Municipality; Dr. Bhuvaneswari, Municipal Health Officer; and Mr. Sivamurugan, Sanitary Inspector, Maraimalai Nagar Municipality. The dignitaries actively participated in the tree plantation drive and emphasized the importance of environmental stewardship, conservation of natural resources, protection of water bodies, and collective action towards building a greener and more sustainable future.

Speaking on the occasion, the participants highlighted the need to protect natural resources, conserve water bodies, and enhance urban biodiversity through sustained tree plantation and maintenance efforts. They also stressed the role of educational institutions and local bodies in promoting environmental awareness among the public.

The initiative received enthusiastic support from local residents and volunteers. The programme not only contributed to increasing green cover in the region but also served as a platform to create awareness on the importance of nurturing and protecting trees for future generations.

Through such collaborative initiatives, SRMIST continues to reaffirm its commitment to environmental conservation, community engagement, and sustainable development in line with its mission of creating a greener and healthier society.
