SRMIST Chancellor Dr. T. R. Paarivendhar’s Vision for Educational Empowerment in Adopted Villages

Education is one of the strongest foundations for social development and rural transformation. With a noble vision to uplift economically weaker rural communities through higher education, our Chancellor Dr. T. R. Paarivendhar has been continuously supporting village development initiatives through SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), Kattankulathur.

Under the Government of India initiative Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA 2.0), SRMIST adopted several villages surrounding the campus to improve educational opportunities for students studying in Government Schools. To support deserving rural students who are unable to pursue higher education due to financial constraints, the Chancellor introduced the Vendhar Education Grants Scheme.

Through this visionary initiative, meritorious students from adopted villages are provided free higher education opportunities at SRMIST in disciplines such as:

  • Engineering
  • Agriculture
  • Commerce
  • Nursing
  • Biotechnology
  • Computer Science
  • Pharmacy
  • Allied Health Sciences
  • Data Science

From the academic year 2021–2022 to 2025–2026, a total of 46 students from adopted villages have benefitted through this scheme.

This initiative has created opportunities for many first-generation graduates and significantly supported girl students from rural backgrounds. The majority of beneficiaries are women students, highlighting the Chancellor’s strong commitment toward women empowerment and inclusive educational growth.

The scheme has:

  • reduced financial burden on rural families,
  • improved higher education participation among Government School students,
  • strengthened university–village relationships,
  • and inspired rural youth to pursue professional careers.

Under the visionary leadership of Dr. T. R. Paarivendhar, SRMIST continues to serve society through meaningful educational outreach and sustainable rural development initiatives.

The Vendhar Education Grants Scheme stands today as a powerful example of how education can transform villages, empower youth, and build a brighter future for rural communities.
