300 Participants Join the Green Initiative

Around 300 participants, including students from the Directorate of Student Affairs, NCC Naval Wing cadets, and staff members of the SRMIST Maintenance Department, actively participated in the cleanliness drive and plantation activities.

The cleanliness drive focused on improving the condition of public spaces and promoting responsible waste management practices. The plantation initiative involved planting native trees and plants to enhance green cover, support local biodiversity, and contribute to a healthier environment.

The Miyawaki forest plantation approach promotes the development of dense green spaces using suitable plant species. Such initiatives can contribute to urban greening, improve local ecological conditions, and create greater awareness of the importance of protecting nature.

Pledge for Tree Plantation and Maintenance

As part of the programme, all participants took a pledge to plant trees and ensure the proper maintenance and protection of the planted saplings. They committed to nurturing the saplings, providing regular watering, and safeguarding them to ensure healthy growth and long-term survival.

The pledge highlighted that environmental responsibility extends beyond planting trees to caring for them throughout their growth. It encouraged participants to adopt sustainable practices and take collective responsibility for protecting the environment.

Honouring Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam’s Vision

The programme served as a tribute to Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam’s vision of a developed, clean, and sustainable India. His emphasis on youth participation and national responsibility continues to inspire students to take an active role in community development and environmental conservation.

By combining cleanliness activities with tree plantation, SRMIST encouraged students to translate environmental awareness into meaningful action.

Contribution to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The initiative supports the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:

  • SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being: Promoting cleaner and healthier public spaces.

  • SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities: Supporting clean public areas and greener urban environments.

  • SDG 13 – Climate Action: Encouraging tree plantation and environmental awareness as part of climate action.

  • SDG 15 – Life on Land: Promoting native vegetation and local biodiversity.

  • SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals: Strengthening collaboration between SRMIST and Maraimalai Nagar Municipality.

SRMIST’s Commitment to a Greener Future

The initiative reaffirmed SRMIST’s commitment to environmental sustainability, cleanliness, biodiversity conservation, and community engagement. The collaboration between the university, municipal authorities, students, and campus staff demonstrated the importance of collective action in creating a cleaner and greener society.

Through such initiatives under Swachhata Hi Seva and Special Campaign 6.0, SRMIST continues to encourage responsible citizenship and active participation in sustainable community development.

Together, let us honour Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam’s vision by building a clean, green, and sustainable India.
