As part of the Hon'ble Chancellor's Birthday Celebrations, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) has initiated a series of Free Medical Camps aimed at extending quality healthcare services to communities in its adopted villages. The initiative is being carried out under the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) in collaboration with the Department of Community Medicine, SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre.
The camp was the second in a series of Eight Free Medical Camps being organized across the adopted villages of SRMIST during August 2026. The series commenced at Karunilam Village, followed by Pulipakkam on 6th August 2026, and is currently progressing across the remaining adopted villages. The initiative aims to bring essential healthcare services closer to rural communities and promote awareness of preventive healthcare and healthy living.
The inaugural camp brought together representatives from the village administration, SRMIST, UBA, and the medical fraternity. Mrs.Nirmala Ashokan, President, Pulipakkam Village Panchayat; Mr.Varadharaj, Panchayat Secretary;
Dr. V. Thirumurugan, Associate Director (Campus Life) and Nodal Officer, UBA, SRMIST; and Dr. Santhanakrishnan C, Associate Professor, Department of Computing Technologies, School of Computing, SRMIST, were present during the programme.
A multidisciplinary team of doctors from SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, led by Dr. MVM Pradeep, Associate Professor provided medical consultations and health screening services to the villagers. Specialists from General Medicine, General Surgery, ENT, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Psychiatry, and Audiology attended to the varied healthcare needs of the beneficiaries.
The camp offered a comprehensive range of free medical services, including general and specialist consultations, blood pressure and blood sugar monitoring, basic medical investigations, eye examinations, health screening, health education, medical counselling, and distribution of essential medicines. Beneficiaries requiring further evaluation or specialized treatment were advised and referred to SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre for appropriate follow-up and continued care.
Student volunteers from the Tamil Perayan Paari Manavar Narpani Mandram actively supported the programme by assisting with beneficiary registration, patient guidance, queue management, documentation, and coordination of various camp activities. Their contribution helped ensure the smooth and systematic conduct of the medical camp.
The camp received an encouraging response from the local community, with more than 300 villagers benefiting from the medical consultations, diagnostic services, health screening, and medicines provided. The programme also emphasized the importance of early detection, preventive healthcare, regular health monitoring, and healthy lifestyle practices.
The successful completion of the second camp at Pulipakkam reflects SRMIST's continued commitment to social responsibility, community engagement, and inclusive development. Through the combined efforts of UBA, SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, faculty members, and student volunteers, the initiative is helping extend quality healthcare services to rural communities and contribute to their overall well-being.
