Event report on “Hands-on Training on Mushroom Cultivation, Vermicompost and Bioenzyme Production for Self Help Groups of UBA-SRMIST Adopted Village”

Department of Biotechnology, School of Bioengineering, SRMIST and Unnat Bharat Abhiyan 2.0-SRMIST have co-organized “Hands-on Training on Mushroom Cultivation, Vermicompost and Bioenzyme Production for Self Help Groups of UBA-SRMIST Adopted Village” on Jan 22-23, 2026. During inauguration, Dr. S. Sahabudeen has welcomed the guests and the participants. In his inaugural address he urged the students to take initiatives in contributing to rural development through science and technology. Mrs. S. Sangeetha, District Social Welfare Officer, Chengalpattu, Social Welfare & Women Empowerment Department, Government of Tamil Nadu is the Chief Guest for the inauguration. During the inauguration she appreciated the efforts by SRMIST for taking such initiatives in reaching the villages of Chengalpattu District where there is a significant women population. She also welcomed the curation of such social programmes to the villages for which her administration would support. Dr. V. Thirumurugan has briefed about the activities of UBA-SRMIST for the sustainability goal achievements in the adopted villages and provided an outline on the 2 days training programme. He appreciated the Department of Biotechnology, School of Bioengineering for being the pioneer in all the UBA related activities. The training manual book in the tamil language was released by the dignitaries at the inaugural event.
Through structured practical sessions, about 47 participants from UBA adopted villages have learnt how to start a new business with minimal capital cost and gain profit. The following sessions were conducted and effectively benefitted by the participants:

Dr. R. Paneerselvam, Former Principal Director MSME has briefly discussed in his valedictory address about the microfinance structure, funding opportunities and the scope of funded projects for socially relevant projects. It was a great eye-opening experience for the participants, faculty members and students.
The valedictory function was presided over by Dr. R. Paneerselvam, Prof. S.Sahabudeen and Dr. V. Thirumurugan. Certificates were distributed to the participants with a feedback session from UBA-SRMIST beneficiaries.
Dr. B. Samuel Jacob, Dr. R. Pachaiappan, Dr. K. Venkatesan, Dr. R. Jaiganesh and Dr. M.K.Jeganathan from Dept. of Biotechnology, School of Bioengineering have coordinated and convened the event. Mr. N.S.Sridhar and Mrs. Aishwarya, UBA-SRMIST cell members have coordinated the village participants for effective participation.
