As part of the Swachh Bharat Mission—India Campaign, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRM IST) successfully conducted a Lake Surrounding Area Cleaning Activity today, 02.08.2025, at 4:00 PM, in association with Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA).
The event saw enthusiastic participation from over 180 volunteers, including students, faculty members, and staff. The cleaning drive took place along the service road of Potheri Lake, located opposite the SRM IST Silver Jubilee Arch.
The activity was graced by Dr. V. Thirumurugan, Nodal Officer – UBA SRMIST and Associate Director – Campus Life, who welcomed all participants and appreciated their commitment to this noble cause of environmental conservation and community service.
NCC and Navy officers, Mr. Jegan, Mr. Sakthiprasad, and Mr. Senthilnathan, Coordinator of the MBA Green Club, also joined the initiative, setting an example and inspiring participants with their active involvement.
The drive aimed to raise awareness about the importance of cleanliness in safeguarding public health and natural ecosystems. Volunteers worked diligently to remove plastic waste and litter, significantly contributing to the beautification and protection of the lake’s surroundings. Gloves and cleaning materials were provided, and refreshments and participation certificates were distributed as tokens of appreciation.
The event concluded with all attendees taking the Swachhata Pledge, reaffirming their collective responsibility toward a cleaner and greener India.
One student participant shared their thoughts:
"This event has made me realize how important lake cleaning and the conservation of water bodies are. Keeping our environment clean, especially our lakes, is essential for sustaining life and protecting future generations. It also reminded me of the urgent need to avoid using plastic in any form, as it poses a serious threat to nature."
This initiative marks yet another milestone in SRM IST’s ongoing efforts to promote civic engagement, sustainability, and environmental awareness within and beyond the campus community.
