SRMIST Brings Skill, Health, and Hope to Villages through Unnat Bharat Abhiyan

Kattankulathur, March 27, 2026: As part of its commitment to community development and rural empowerment, the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan 2.0 cell of SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), in association with World Community Service Centre and Vethathiri Maharishi SKY Yoga, Guduvancherry, is implementing a comprehensive Village Service Project (VSP) at Anjur Village.

This seven-month village development initiative, which commenced two months ago, adopts a holistic approach focusing on mental, physical, and spiritual well-being, along with sustainable livelihood generation. The project encompasses a range of community-oriented activities including yoga practices, tree plantation, aari work, and tailoring skill development for women entrepreneurship.

As a key component of the wellness initiative, nearly 300 villagers have already benefited from Kundalini yoga training conducted by experienced instructors residing in the village. The yoga programme is open to all sections of the community, including men, women, youth, and the elderly, ensuring inclusive participation.

The sessions are conducted daily from 4:30 AM, with structured time slots to suit different groups. Housewives attend sessions between 11:00 AM and 12:00 Noon and from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, while youth participate in the evening sessions from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM after their academic hours. The initiative has witnessed enthusiastic participation from across the village, promoting discipline, health, and overall well-being.

Further strengthening the livelihood component, seven tailoring machines were recently distributed to the village, marking the launch of a structured tailoring training programme. A qualified trainer has been appointed, and a detailed five-month curriculum has been designed. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be awarded certificates to enhance their employability and support self-reliance.

The inaugural event was graced by Dr. V. Thirumurugan, Associate Director – Campus Life-SRMIST and Nodal Officer, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan-SRMIST, along with Anjur Village President Mrs. Devaraj and Mr. Uma Maheswaran.

In the first batch, 30 women have enrolled in the tailoring training programme. The village administration has extended full support by providing space for the activities, and the trainers are accommodated in the village community hall to ensure smooth and effective implementation.

This initiative reflects SRMIST’s integrated rural outreach under the Village Service Project, combining health, environmental awareness, skill development, and women empowerment, thereby creating a sustainable and replicable model for rural transformation
