The main aim of the Hackathon is to cultivate young minds to provide innovative solutions to rural development on broad themes like renewable energy, water management, and waste management. The students of arts, science and engineering and technology are eligible to apply for this Hackathon. The team size is five students and there should be at least one female student in each team.

The specific themes of SH-SRD 2021 are to design affordable solar cookers for rural households to avoid pollution of conventional fuels and other inefficient cooking methods. The next one is to propose ideas to treat wastewater in rural applications. The final sub-theme is to provide Agri-tech solutions for stubble management. Nationwide enthusiastic participation has been witnessed with 120 submissions to the Hackathon. After scrutinizing submitted proposals for completeness and correctness, 105 teams were selected for the competition. The submissions are as follows.

·         Renewable Energy: 30 Teams

·         Water Management: 30 Teams

·         Waste Management: 45 Teams

There are three levels of selection and are provided below.

Level-1: Two experts in the fields shortlisted 50% of teams for the second-level competitions for online presentations of their ideas. This is done based on ranking all the proposals in each theme, and the top 50% are selected.

Level-2: From the three verticals, Renewable Energy, Water and Waste Management, 15 to 20 teams have participated in the second round on 22.10.2021 from 9.00 AM to 5.00 PM through online presentation to the two judges. The top 5-6 teams are selected for the final selection.

Level-3: The selected top 5-6 teams from Level-2 are attended the Grand Final Hackathon. The eminent field experts from IIT Madras and IIT Tirupati selected three top-ranked in each vertical.

How the students show interest in sustainable rural development technologies ensures the concrete hope that the younger generation will provide innovative solutions to the rural community and development of the nation.

"My idea of village swaraj is that it is a complete republic, independent of its neighbours for its own vital wants, and yet interdependent for many others in which dependence is a necessity”.  Mahatma Gandhiji says this. We strongly believe the youngsters will put their efforts to make true of Mahatma’s dreams on village development as it’s the backbone of our country.

Thank you all for being part of the Smart Hackathon and making it a grand success.
