    GRAM SABHA MEETING

    People eagerly participated and interacted in the Gram Sabha meeting, which was held after a long-time gap. Village women and youngsters eagerly participated and raised the problem faced in the village during the meeting. The newly elected Panchayat president lead this meeting so that the people discussed their prior problems. SRMIST village coordinators also participated in the meeting. 



    Many problems were brought out through discussion. A few of these are as follows:

                       v  Detailed description of Village Panchayat administration and public Expenditure.

    v  To help implementation of the development programs and schemes of the Panchayat.

    v  To identify beneficiaries for different programs and schemes.

    v  Sanitation (Maintenance of School toilets and Anganwadi Centre Toilets)

    v  Nutrition Movement (Improving the health and Personal health of women and Children)

    v  Prohibition of Production of plastic products ( Single use plastic reduction)

    v  Women’s Program (Improving the livelihood of women)

    v  A Special Thanks to Dr.Paarivendhar (Founder Chancellor SRMIST)A free Education seat as a part of Paarivendhar Free Education Trust was allotted to the orathur village student Ms. K. Rajeswari based on the merit list who is studying at SRM Arts and Science College, Kattankulathur.

    Based on the recent announcement from Government of Tamil Nadu, Gram Sabha was held at Nattarasanpattu village which is adopted under UBA SRMIST. The gram Sabha was presided over by the newly elected panchayat president, village administrative officials and the UBA SRMIST village coordinator/representative.

    During the Gram Sabha the following initiatives taken up by the UBA SRMIST towards the welfare and development of           the village have been emphasized:

    ·         A survey on village population, toilets count, availability of drinking water taps, common tanks and sumps available, number of water resources, transport and medical facilities. The report was collected from the village administrative officer and submitted to Nodal officer Dr.V.Thirumurugan.

    ·         A biogas plant for a house hold to utilize the waste to convert to cooking was given to a beneficiary in Nattarasanpattu village

    ·         A plastic waste awareness campaign was organized with the students of Higher Secondary School students

    ·         The school premises (both primary and high school) were cleaned, painted and re-wiring was done

    ·         A free education seat as a part of Paarivendhar Free Education Trust was allotted to the village student Ms. Sangeetha based on the merit list who is studying B. Com at SRM Arts and Science College, Kattankulathur

    ·         A vermicompost pit facility is being laid for the organic fertilizer distribution to the farmers

    ·         A massive tree palm tree plantation drive was conducted on the banks of Kalivandhapattu lake (about 10000 seeds were sown on a single day)

    ·         A medical camp was organized for the elderly people and tablets were provided from the SRM Medical College, Kattankulathur

    ·         An Entrepreneurship awareness campaign (Areca Plate manufacturing and Spirulina ) was organized to benefit the women of Nattarasanpattu village

    ·         A cement rim dustbin were provided to the village for pilling the wastes from the streets and enable the waste collector to collect the waste at a single point

    ·         A village visit was organized with the students of SRMIST to emphasize the “Swacchata Hi Seva” in which we conducted door to door survey, given training for school children about the WHO hand wash techniques, tree plantation and women health hygiene survey.

    ·         As a part of COVID 19 relief campaign, SRMIST provided free ration to 300 households of Nattarsanpattu village in May, 2020.

    Our regular village development includes:

    ·         Combating air pollution through plantation of high CO2 absorbing tree saplings in the campus

    ·         Waste recycling and energy conservation

    ·         Water conservation

    ·         Forest conservation

    ·         Cleanliness drive in campus/hostels in specific towards COVID related wastes

    ·         Personal hygiene

    ·         Single use plastic reduction

    ·         Education and job creation

    ·         Skill development

    We took pledge during this Gram Sabha that SRMIST, being the Higher Education Institution (HEI) thrive to create such awareness among the people in a more systematic and effective way by adoption of best practices to make the country clean and self-sufficient.

    UNNAT BHARAT ABHIYAN

    SRMIST under the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan Scheme has been rendering the commendable service to the society especially to the adopted villages. Apart from the adopted villages we are doing Excellent service to the government schools. Recently we received a letter on 17.02.2022.

     

    From Head Mistress, Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Thiruporur requesting us to donate desks and benches for their school children. Based on their earnest request, our Nodal Officer Dr. V. Thirumurugan visited the school and he suggested that we provide 20 desks and benches to the Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Thiruporur. 

    The rough estimate cost for the desks and benches was Rs. 1, 29,840 /-

    SRMIST delivered the desks and benches on 23.04.2022. Now the school students are utilizing the desks and benches and are greatly thankful to us.

    SRMIST under the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan Scheme has been rendering the commendable service to the society especially to the adopted villages. Apart from the adopted villages we are doing excellent service to the government schools. Recently we received a letter on 15.12.2021. The Head Mistress, Government Higher Secondary School, Chunambedu, Chengalpattu District, is requesting us to donate desks and benches for their school children. Based on their earnest request,

    our Nodal Officer Dr. V. Thirumurugan visited the school and he suggested that we provide 60 desks and benches to the Government Higher Secondary School, Chunambedu, Chengalpattu District.


     The rough estimate cost for the desks and benches was Rs. 3, 89,520 /-

     SRMIST delivered the desk and benches on 28.12.2021.

    World Earth Day 22 April 2022 -on the theme of ‘Invest in our Planet”

     World Earth Day was commemorated on 22 April 2022 on the theme of ‘Invest in our Planet”. The event was organized by Department of Biotechnology, School of Bioengineering, SRMIST Kattankulathur in association with Unnat Bharat Abhiyan 2.0 SRMIST and SRM Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship Centre (SIIEC), Institute Innovation Council (IIC). A virtual guest lecture was conducted at 11 A.M. to raise awareness on conservation of nature and climate change mitigation. The speakers are Dr.P. Ravichandran, Prof and Head, Department of Plant Sciences, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Thirunelveli, Tamil Nadu and Team AEREM, An Eco-innovation start up incubated at SIIEC, SRMIST.


    The gathering was welcomed by Prof. R.A.Nazeer, Head, Department of Biotechnology, School of Bioengineering. The speaker was introduced by Dr.B. Samuel Jacob, Assistant Professor, Department of Biotechnology.

    Prof. Ravichandran during his talk shared an ample amount of information on conserving the extremely endangered tree, grass and medicinal plant species that are available in the Western Ghats. Many medicinal plant varieties were identified and biotechnological tools like plant tissue culture, protoplasm fusion and artificial propagation of these medicinal varieties. He have emphasized the students and research community should come forward in conserving the nature by application of modern technologies thereby theextinction maybe avoided.


    Team AEREM, Co-Founder Mr. Atul J Abraham briefed about the consequences of CO2 on human health and environment. The urge for maintaining the indoor air quality is need of an hour in a closed office or ecosystem. Their patented product that used Algae as a CO2 sequestering agent could be a future product that maintains the indoor air quality at the same time solving the crisis sustainably.

    There are about 125 participants that includes B.Tech, M.Tech and Ph.D., attended the event and the sessions were quite interactive. Dr.B.Samuel Jacob gave vote of thanks.
