World Earth Day was commemorated on 22 April 2022 on the theme of ‘Invest in our Planet”. The event was organized by Department of Biotechnology, School of Bioengineering, SRMIST Kattankulathur in association with Unnat Bharat Abhiyan 2.0 SRMIST and SRM Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship Centre (SIIEC), Institute Innovation Council (IIC). A virtual guest lecture was conducted at 11 A.M. to raise awareness on conservation of nature and climate change mitigation. The speakers are Dr.P. Ravichandran, Prof and Head, Department of Plant Sciences, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Thirunelveli, Tamil Nadu and Team AEREM, An Eco-innovation start up incubated at SIIEC, SRMIST.

The gathering was welcomed by Prof. R.A.Nazeer, Head, Department of Biotechnology, School of Bioengineering. The speaker was introduced by Dr.B. Samuel Jacob, Assistant Professor, Department of Biotechnology.

Prof. Ravichandran during his talk shared an ample amount of information on conserving the extremely endangered tree, grass and medicinal plant species that are available in the Western Ghats. Many medicinal plant varieties were identified and biotechnological tools like plant tissue culture, protoplasm fusion and artificial propagation of these medicinal varieties. He have emphasized the students and research community should come forward in conserving the nature by application of modern technologies thereby theextinction maybe avoided.
