Being world's largest populated country, India’s growth engine depends on rural India, which contributes 69 percent of the total population. While the overall economy is growing at the rate of seven percent, rural India still lags behind. Improving the amenities for smart farming and agricultural technology development by effective utilization of electricity, potable water, etc are a few major factors required for rural productivity and economic growth. The era of electronics can help these rural communities to enhance quality of their livelihood and to provide better education to kids by upskilling them to become a local manufacturer of electronics products. The aim of this proposal is to bring a technology literacy and utilization through Electron Device Society (EDS) among rural communities. The Kattankulathur block is located in the Kanchipuram District of Tamil Nadu state of India. The major source of income for these villagers are from small scale agricultural farming which could provide only a limited income.  Through this project proposal total 35 young villagers are trained to assemble solar powered LED lights for indoor and outdoor applications. The objective of this proposal is to create local entrepreneurship awareness among Villagers, local manufacturing, technical skills, and awareness of solar powered light for their need. The training will provide a basic platform for upskilling them and also a small step towards use of renewable energy instead of use of traditional fuel kerosine.

Criteria of Selection: The preference for selection of candidates for training program is carried out with the help of EDS volunteers by a survey. The youth of the village are preferred for training. Secondly Minimum education of 10th standard pass is considered in order to work with electronics components. Finally, the families in remote farming without electricity is considered for the training in order to provide them renewable source of energy.

Business purpose: The group of people are trained how to design solar powered LED lights for different application based on local needs. The initial support of purchasing equipment (soldering instruments, wire cutter, screw drivers etc.) are provided to them through EDS humanitarian project grant. A professional training of PCB manufacturing, assembling of components will be given by EDS volunteers. Later this group of trained manpower are motivated to design more solar light for commercial purpose.
