Massive Palm Seed Plantation Drive

 We are pleased to share the successful completion of the Massive Palm Seed Plantation Drive organised by SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) through Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) and the SRM Green Club, in association with Rotaract and the Social Club under the Directorate of Student Affairs, at Palayeri Lake, Venkatapuram, on September 4, 2026.

 

As part of the Hon’ble Chancellor’s Birthday Celebration and Teachers’ Day observance, more than 120 students and staff volunteers, along with university social workers, actively participated and collectively sowed over 6,000 palm seeds in and around the lake area.

 We sincerely appreciate the enthusiastic participation and valuable support of our students, faculty members, staff, university officials, social workers and local community representatives in making this green initiative a grand success.

This initiative reflects SRMIST–UBA’s continued commitment to environmental sustainability, community engagement, social responsibility and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

NATIONAL NUTRITION MONTH CELEBRATION 2026

  As part of the National Nutrition Month celebration 2026 , Department of Nutrition and Dietetics in association with Unnat Bharat Abhiyan  , SRM IST organized a community field visit  Nutrition Awareness Programme on 3^rd  September 2026 at Samuthayakodam (community hall), Anjur Village, Chengalpattu.

 

The programme was carried out with the participation of 21 PG II year students and faculty members. The visit aimed to provide practical exposure to students in community-based nutritional assessment, dietary counselling, and nutrition education.

During the visit, anthropometric and functional assessments were conducted, including height, weight, BMI, Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC), skinfold thickness, and handgrip strength. Information regarding participants’ dietary habits, meal patterns, food choices, hydration, and lifestyle practices was also collected through interaction with the participants.

Based on the assessment, individualized nutrition counselling was provided. Participants were educated on maintaining a balanced diet, adequate protein intake, regular consumption of fruits and vegetables, sufficient hydration, and healthy eating practices appropriate for an active lifestyle.

As part of the awareness activity, a short educational drama was presented to highlight the importance of balanced nutrition along with regular yoga practice. The programme emphasized the role of essential nutrients, adequate water intake, and the importance of avoiding unhealthy practices such as excessive junk food consumption, sugary drinks, and skipping meals.

Healthcare outreach formed an important part of SRM Institute of Science and Technology’s (SRMIST) community development initiatives, as part of the Hon'ble Chancellor's Birthday Celebrations, leading to the organization of a Free Medical Camp at Saradha Sakthi Beedam on 29 August 2026. The programme was undertaken by Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA), SRMIST, in association with the Department of Community Medicine, SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, to extend essential healthcare services to the rural community.

 

This program was headed by  Dr. V. Thirumurugan, Associate Director (Campus Life) and Nodal Officer, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA), SRMIST.

 

A multidisciplinary team of doctors from SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, headed by Dr,G.Susmitha. Dept.Of Community Medicine  rendered comprehensive healthcare services to the villagers. The medical team comprised specialists from General Medicine, General Surgery, ENT, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Pediatrics, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Psychiatry, and Audiology, ensuring holistic medical care for people of all age groups.

The camp offered a comprehensive range of free healthcare services, including general and specialist medical consultations, height and weight measurement, blood pressure monitoring, blood sugar testing, basic blood investigations, health screening, health education, and distribution of essential medicines. Eye examinations were also conducted for beneficiaries requiring ophthalmic evaluation, while patients identified with conditions requiring advanced medical care were counselled and referred to SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre for further treatment and follow-up.

The medical camp received an overwhelming response from the local community, with more than 180 villagers benefiting from the free consultations, diagnostic services, health screening, eye examinations, and medicines. The initiative played a vital role in promoting preventive healthcare, early detection of diseases, and awareness of healthy lifestyle practices among the rural population.

The successful conduct of the Free Medical Camp at  demonstrated SRMIST's continued commitment to community engagement and rural healthcare through the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan initiative. The collaborative efforts of SRMIST, SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, village authorities, doctors, staff, and student volunteers contributed significantly to the effective delivery of essential healthcare services to the rural community

Kattankulathur, August 26, 2026: As part of the Hon’ble Chancellor’s Birthday Celebrations and in line with his vision of protecting nature through plantation initiatives, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) organised a Palm Seed Collection Drive on August 26, 2026, at the Paathiri Village Lake Bunds near Melmaruvathur.

The drive was organised by UBA-SRMIST and SRM Green Club, in association with Rotaract and the Social Club – Directorate of Student Affairs, SRMIST, with a target of collecting 20,000 palm seeds. A total of 73 registered students and faculty members participated in the environmental initiative.

The programme commenced with a welcome address by Dr. S. Pradeep, Assistant Director, Student Affairs & Coordinator, SRM Green Club. Dr. V. Thirumurugan, Associate Director – Campus Life & Nodal Officer, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan-SRMIST, delivered a special address and emphasised the importance of protecting nature, conserving native species and involving students in environmental sustainability initiatives.

The participants departed from the Clock Tower, Annexure Campus, Kattankulathur, at 6.45 a.m. and reached the Paathiri Village Lake Bunds. Breakfast was provided to the participants before the commencement of the field activity.

Prior to the collection, Dr.S. Pradeep, Assistant Director – Student Affairs, briefed the participants on safety precautions and guidelines to be followed during the activity. Students and faculty members then enthusiastically participated in collecting palm seeds along the lake bunds.

The collection activity continued until 11.30 a.m., resulting in the collection of approximately 6,000 palm seeds. The collected seeds were loaded into a truck and transported to the SRMIST campus for future plantation and environmental conservation activities.

The initiative supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG 13 – Climate Action, and SDG 15 – Life on Land, through its focus on plantation, biodiversity conservation and ecosystem protection.

The Palm Seed Collection Drive highlighted SRMIST’s commitment to environmental sustainability and provided students and faculty members with an opportunity to contribute directly to nature conservation. The successful participation of 73 members reinforced the institution’s collective commitment to protecting nature and building a greener and more sustainable future

With a commitment to extending quality healthcare services to rural communities and as part of the Hon'ble Chancellor's Birthday Celebrations, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), under the aegis of Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA), in association with the Department of Community Medicine, SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, successfully organized a Free Medical Camp at Anjur Village on 25 August 2026. The camp was part of a series of eight free medical camps planned across the adopted villages of SRMIST, with the objective of providing accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare services to rural communities.

 

 

The programme was attended by Mrs.Selvi Deveraj, President, Kolathur  Village Panchayat; Mr.Ramanujam, Panchayat Secretary; Dr. V. Thirumurugan, Associate Director (Campus Life) and Nodal Officer, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA), SRMIST.and Dr.Vijayakumar  Associate Professor  Dept.of Mech E.C.E .,Coordinator,.Anjur Village.,UBA-SRMIST.
