The Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) Cell of SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), in coordination with the Regional Coordinating Institution (RCI), UBA Indian Institute of Technology Madras, organised a one-day programme on “Peer Institutes Orientation Programme on “Best Practices, Learnings and Demonstrations” at the SRMIST, Kattankulathur on February 17, 2026. This programme aimed at sharing field-level experiences, successful implementation models and sustainable rural development initiatives under the UBA scheme of the Ministry of Education, Government of India.

Dr. V. Thirumurugan, Associate Director (Campus Life) and Nodal Officer, UBA- SRMIST, delivered the welcome address and briefed the gathering on the significance of the programme. 

Prof. C. Muthamizhchelvan, Vice-Chancellor, SRMIST in his presidential address emphasised that higher educational institutions should act as catalysts for rural transformation through knowledge transfer and sustained community engagement. He stated that faculty members and students have to regularly visit adopted villages, interact with residents, and implement need-based development initiatives. He underscored the importance of identifying the strengths of each village and creating a sustainable development framework that ensures continuity rather than one-time interventions.

Prof. Sudarsan Padmanabhan, Professor, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Madras, and Coordinator, RCI–UBA, delivered the inaugural address. He envisioned that the Gandhian principles on Nation development were closely knitted with rural development and that made Government of India to introduce the UBA vision aligning to it. He added that national development is linked to human development indices and inclusive rural growth. He highlighted the need for a bottom-up approach to governance and called for a paradigm shift in development planning from rural to urban areas, in line with the vision of Mahatma Gandhi. He added that the convergence of Higher Education Institutions and rural development efforts under UBA 3.0 would be a significant step forward.

Tmt. Hima Bindu, Project Coordinator, UBA, IIT Madras, elaborated on the objectives and implementation strategies of UBA and encouraged participating institutions to adopt structured and measurable development practices in their adopted villages. She elaborated about the UBA stakeholders and their role in implementation of development initiatives through SDGs. She emphasized the importance of the Grama Sabha participation as the nodal point in interlinking the village and the PIs. An interactive session with representatives of PIs made them a clarity about the way forward for UBA 3.0.

Dr. Samuel Jacob, Adopted Village Coordinator, UBA-SRMIST, presented the SRMIST’s initiatives, field-level experiences, successful implementation models and sustainable rural development activities in sanitation, health awareness, skill development, sustainable agriculture and waste management across its adopted villages. Feedback from beneficiaries such as Vendhar Scholarship Student graduate, Head Master (Anjur Higher Secondary School), and representatives from women self-help group (Ms. Yasodha and Ms. Tulasi, Inaindha Kaigal Self-help Group, Nattarasanpattu (an UBA adopted village) made the SRMIST’s contribution as impactful.

The post-lunch sessions focused on entrepreneurship and sustainable livelihoods. Mrs. Vasudha Binjani, Miracle Enzymes, Chennai, spoke on business opportunities through bioenzyme production from waste, while Dr. L. Ramazeame of SRM College of Agricultural Sciences delivered a talk on beekeeping as a viable rural enterprise.

Certificates were distributed to participants during the valedictory session. The programme concluded with a feedback session and witnessed participation from UBA nodal officers, faculty members and village representatives from peer institutions.

REPORT ON BLOOD DONATION CAMP

3. Venue: Mechanical Hanger, Main Campus, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur.

4. Organised By: NSS UNIT 1, Department of Mechanical Engineering, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur in association with the Department of Transfusion Medicine and Blood Centre, SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre.

 

Introduction:

A Blood Donation Camp was successfully conducted on 10th February 2026 at Mechanical Hanger with the objective of promoting voluntary blood donation and creating awareness about the importance of donating blood to save lives. The camp aimed to encourage students, staff, and research scholars to contribute towards a noble cause. The Department of Transfusion Medicine and Blood Centre, SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, is known for conducting voluntary blood donation camps and awareness drives regularly.

Objectives of the Camp:

·         To collect blood for patients in need and emergency cases.

·         To promote awareness about the importance of voluntary blood donation.

·         To motivate people to become regular blood donors.

·         To support hospitals and blood banks in maintaining adequate blood supply.

Camp Procedure and Activities:

The camp was conducted in an organized manner. The process included:

Step 1: Registration - Donors registered their details at the registration counter.

Step 2: Medical Screening- Doctors conducted preliminary health check-ups including:

Blood Pressure, Hemoglobin test, Weight check and General health evaluation.

Step 3: Blood Collection - Eligible donors donated blood under the supervision of qualified doctors and nurses.

Step 4: Refreshments - After donating blood, donors were provided with refreshments such as Juice, Biscuits, Water.

Step 5: Certificates - Donors were issued appreciation certificates by the organizing committee.

All necessary safety precautions were followed, and donors were guided properly by doctors and volunteers.

 Participation and Response:

The camp received an overwhelming response from students, teaching staff, non-teaching staff, and members of the local community. Many donors actively participated and showed enthusiasm to support the cause.

A total of 60 donors registered, out of which 52 donors successfully donated blood. The collected blood units were safely stored and handed over to the blood bank for further medical use.

 

Special Arrangements:

To ensure smooth functioning, the following arrangements were made:

·         Clean and well-organized donation area

·         Seating and resting facility for donors

·         Availability of doctors and nurses throughout the camp

·         Emergency medical kit and ambulance support

·         Volunteers for guidance and support

·         Refreshments such as juice, biscuits, and fruits for donors

 

Outcome:

The Blood Donation Camp held on 10th February 2026 was a great success. It helped in collecting valuable blood units that can save many lives. The event also created awareness about the importance of blood donation and encouraged people to take part in such humanitarian activities. The organizers expressed gratitude to the medical team, volunteers, and all donors for their valuable contribution.

Inauguration of Village Service Programme (VSP) at Anjur Village

 Dear Sir/ Madam,

Greetings.

The World Community Service Centre (WCSC), with the support of SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), is implementing the Village Service Programme (VSP) at Anjur Village, an adopted village under the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) of SRMIST.

As part of this initiative, a Village Service Centre is being established at Anjur Village, where free Simplified Kundalini Yoga (SKY) training and value-based programmes will be conducted continuously for one year, with full support from SRMIST. The programme, based on the ideals of Vethathiri Maharishi, aims at holistic physical, mental, moral, and social well-being.

In addition, SRMIST is sponsoring vocational skill development, including tailoring training with five (5) tailoring machines provided for village use. Separate male and female trainers will reside in the village to ensure inclusive, effective, and continuous training. Special health and awareness camps will also be organized.

The overall objective of the programme is to transform Anjur Village into a Healthy, Skilled, and Peaceful Village.

Department of Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering in association with volunteers  from the Department of Networking and Communications 

Objective of the Event: 

The outreach activity was organized with the objective of creating awareness among school  students about renewable energy, energy harvesting techniques, and environmental  sustainability. The program aimed to inspire young minds to think innovatively about clean  energy solutions and environmental protection. 

Event Description: 

An outreach activity titled “Energy Harvesting for Young Innovators” was successfully  conducted on 4th February 2026 at the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan adopted village Kolathur. The  program focused on educating school students about future energy solutions and promoting  environmental awareness. 

As part of the event, drawing and speech competitions were conducted on the theme  “Environmental Awareness”. The competition titles were communicated to the students in  advance to encourage preparation and creativity. 

To support student participation, sketch books, crayons, pencil sets, and chart papers were  distributed to all participants of the drawing competition. The students actively participated  with great enthusiasm and showcased their creativity and communication skills.

• Total number of student participants: 75 

• Number of prize winners: 6 students 

All participants were awarded certificates and gifts in appreciation of their involvement.  Refreshments were provided to the entire school students and faculty members. The event  arrangements, including refreshments and banners, were supported under Unnat Bharat  Abhiyan (UBA).
