 Empowering Rural Women through Entrepreneurship and Campus Collaboration

The Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) Cell of SRM Institute of Science and Technology, in association with the Tamil Nadu Urban Livelihoods Mission (TNULM), the Tamil Nadu Corporation for Women’s Development, and the Department of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, successfully organized a three-day College Bazaar from 30th July to 1st August 2025.

The event was inaugurated by Dr. Shivganesh Bhargava, Dean, School of Management, in the presence of Dr. V. Thirumurugan, Associate Director (Campus Life), SRMIST, and Ms. Emilly Priya, Assistant Project Officer (APO), Chengalpattu District – Mahalir Thittam, Government of Tamil Nadu.

Women from various Self Help Groups (SHGs) representing UBA–SRMIST adopted villages showcased a vibrant range of rural products. The stalls featured:

  • Nursery and garden items

  • Garments and hand-stitched clothes

  • Homemade herbal soaps

  • Traditional sweets and snacks

  • Eco-friendly household products

  • Handicrafts and decorative items

The event witnessed active participation from students and faculty, who visited the stalls and supported the women entrepreneurs by purchasing their products.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Shivganesh Bhargava highlighted the importance of nurturing rural entrepreneurship. He announced that the School of Management will provide training in marketing and product positioning to SHG members, helping them enhance their visibility and reach broader markets.

This initiative served as a platform to:

  • Promote women-led micro-enterprises

  • Provide market linkage for rural products

  • Foster academic-social collaboration under UBA

The three-day bazaar concluded on a highly successful note, building momentum for continued support to rural women entrepreneurs through institutional and government partnerships.

Cycle Rally by UBA-SRMIST on International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2025

 Kattankulathur, July 26, 2025:

As part of the observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2025, the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan – SRM Institute of Science and Technology (UBA-SRMIST) organized an impactful Cycle Rally to promote awareness on drug abuse prevention, treatment, and healthy living among students and the community.

The rally was inaugurated by Dr. Senthil SelvanProfessor, Department of Civil Engineering, and Coordinator of the Anti-Drug Committee, who addressed the participants and flagged off the event. In his remarks, he emphasized the importance of community-driven efforts in combating drug abuse and fostering a culture of wellness and resilience among the youth.

The event was presided over by Dr. V. ThirumuruganAssociate Director (Campus Life) and Nodal Officer, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, who also distributed participation certificates to the students, faculty, and staff who successfully completed the rally.

The rally began at 6:00 AM from the Clock Tower Circle and proceeded to SRM Care Farm at Gudalur, where breakfast was arranged for all participants, followed by the return ride to the campus.

The program concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Ms. Irene SampathResearch Associate, School of Public Health (SPH), who acknowledged the enthusiastic participation and the coordinated efforts of all departments and organizers.

This year’s rally was conducted under the global theme:

National Broadcasting Day

 

National Broadcasting Day, observed annually on July 23 in India, commemorates the inception of radio broadcasting in the country. The day highlights the significance of radio as a powerful medium for communication, education, and entertainment, playing a crucial role in uniting communities and promoting arts and sciences across the nation.

To mark this occasion, SRM Muthucharam Community Radio, in collaboration with Unnat Bharat Abhiyan 2.0, organized a special celebration at Panchayat Union Middle School, Kolathur. The program commenced with a welcome address by Dr. T. Kalaivani, Station Manager, SRM Muthucharam Community Radio. She highlighted the importance of National Broadcasting Day and elaborated on the radio station’s efforts in connecting and empowering local communities.

The event featured special talks by esteemed faculty members from SRMIST, Kattankulathur:

Dr. Annapurani Panaiyappan, Professor & Head, Department of Networking & Communications, delivered a talk on “National Broadcasting and Its Importance.”

Dr. S. Balamurugaa, Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, spoke on “Rural Empowerment through Radio.”

Dr. P. Susai Manickam, Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, addressed the topic “Radio in Daily Life.”

Mr. B.R. Rajan, Headmaster of the host school, shared his feedback and appreciation for the event. Prizes were distributed to student winners by SRMIST faculty members.

Mr. Thairiyaraj, Production Executive, served as the master of ceremonies, while Mr. Kesavan, Sound Engineer, and Mr. Sathish, Production Assistant, provided technical and logistical support for the smooth conduct of the event.


In the lead-up to the celebration, a speech competition on “Importance of Radio” was organized for the school students. The competition was evaluated by a panel consisting of SRMIST faculty and school teachers. Top performers in each category were awarded individual prizes. All participating students and teachers were presented with gifts and refreshments to conclude the event on a joyful note.

International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2025 rally

 As part of the global observance of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2025, a student rally was organized at SRM University, Kattankulathur. The event aimed to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and the importance of preventive education among the youth. The rally witnessed active participation from students, particularly from the SRM Medical College and Allied Health Sciences departments, all dressed in uniform medical attire, symbolizing their role in promoting health and well-being.

The participants walked in unity around the campus and surrounding areas holding placards with powerful anti-drug slogans, promoting messages such as “Say No to Drugs,” “Your Future Matters,” and “Be Smart, Don’t Start.” The rally commenced in front of SRM Global Hospitals and proceeded through the main roads within the campus premises.





This rally served not only as a powerful statement against drug abuse but also reflected SRM University's commitment to social responsibility, public health awareness, and student engagement in societal causes. Events like these play a crucial role in shaping a responsible future generation by instilling strong values of discipline, awareness, and action.

The day concluded with a brief address by faculty leaders, appreciating the participation of students and reiterating the importance of staying drug-free and promoting healthy living.
