Experiential Learning of Solid Waste Management Facilities at SRMIST - 20.09.2024

On the occasion of World Clean Up Day – 20.09.2024, Environmental Management System in association with the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan 2.0 and Directorate of Learning and Development organized a programme on Experiential learning of solid waste management facilities from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm with 3 sessions at the SRMIST, Kattankulathur Campus. There were 22 participants including students, research scholars, teaching and non-teaching staffs and they have taken through the bus for the field visit.

Main objective is to enable the stakeholders understanding about the environmental aspects of solid waste management, importance of source segregation, challenges involved in solid waste management, bio-mining of legacy solid waste, solid waste management practices, and circular economy. this programme is carried out as 3 sessions

First session was about environmental aspects of solid waste management practices and Bio-mining. The environmental pollution caused by the ineffective solid waste management was discussed. The quantity and types of waste generated in the campus were explained to the participants. The process involved in the bio-mining was briefed. The trommel machine (figure 2) was placed in the yard to separate the solid waste materials (40 mm sieve size). The trash below the 40 mm was once again separated using a 10 mm sieve and to make the horticultural waste smaller in size, it was being shredded using shredder. The participants had a look around of the machineries and understood their operations. There was also an ongoing shed construction to segregate the daily waste to avoid dumping. Organic waste management for the left-over vegetables and dry leaves was explained. The vermi compost pit to produce manure was showcased to the participants, in which the American earthworm is the type of vermi used.

second session was about solid waste generation and segregation rate, challenges involved, and circular economy. Participants learned about the amount of waste that was separated every day in the campus, it was about 4% of the waste was separated. The difficulties associated with segregation included theft, Oduor generation, and health concerns for the employees.

Final session was about horticulture waste management and production of manure. The participants acquired knowledge regarding the manure producing process. The Vermi used was the African night crawler earthworm (figure 6). Vermicomposting is the eco-friendly process, which can be used in farms to grow vegetables, flowers, fruits and other crops.

Overall, the 3 sessions made the participants more informative about the solid waste management practices. The visit enhanced their understanding of the programme objective clearly. After the programme, we have collected the feedback from the participants.

“Entrepreneurship Development Training on Solar Powered LED Luminary Products for Rural People” (18th & 19th September 2024)

Being world's largest populated country, India’s growth engine depends on rural India, which contributes 69 percent of the total population. While the overall economy is growing at the rate of seven percent, rural India still lags behind. Improving the amenities for smart farming and agricultural technology development by effective utilization of electricity, potable water, etc are a few major factors required for rural productivity and economic growth. The era of electronics can help these rural communities to enhance quality of their livelihood and to provide better education to kids by upskilling them to become a local manufacturer of electronics products. The aim of this proposal is to bring a technology literacy and utilization through Electron Device Society (EDS) among rural communities. The Kattankulathur block is located in the Kanchipuram District of Tamil Nadu state of India. The major source of income for these villagers are from small scale agricultural farming which could provide only a limited income.  Through this project proposal total 35 young villagers are trained to assemble solar powered LED lights for indoor and outdoor applications. The objective of this proposal is to create local entrepreneurship awareness among Villagers, local manufacturing, technical skills, and awareness of solar powered light for their need. The training will provide a basic platform for upskilling them and also a small step towards use of renewable energy instead of use of traditional fuel kerosine.

Criteria of Selection: The preference for selection of candidates for training program is carried out with the help of EDS volunteers by a survey. The youth of the village are preferred for training. Secondly Minimum education of 10th standard pass is considered in order to work with electronics components. Finally, the families in remote farming without electricity is considered for the training in order to provide them renewable source of energy.

Business purpose: The group of people are trained how to design solar powered LED lights for different application based on local needs. The initial support of purchasing equipment (soldering instruments, wire cutter, screw drivers etc.) are provided to them through EDS humanitarian project grant. A professional training of PCB manufacturing, assembling of components will be given by EDS volunteers. Later this group of trained manpower are motivated to design more solar light for commercial purpose.

National Nutrition Month Celebration at Panchayat Union Middle School, Thenmelpakkam - 03.09.2024

The Department of Clinical Nutrition organized a camp in association with Unnat Bharat Abhiyan at Panchayat Union Middle School, Thenmelpakkam, Chengalpet district, as part of the National Nutrition Month celebration. The theme for the event was "Nutritious Diet for All," reflecting the commitment to promoting healthy eating habits among the younger generation. The Postgraduate students performed a puppet show that highlighted the hidden negative consequences of commercially available juices. This unique presentation attracted the audience's interest, making it a useful tool for communicating vital nutritional facts in an appealing manner.

One of the key highlights of the event was the educational display of posters. These posters provided valuable information on various aspects of nutrition, including protein-rich foods, iron, calcium, and vitamin A-rich foods, as well as natural immune boosters found in everyday foods. The visually appealing and informative posters aimed to increase awareness among the students about the importance of a balanced diet. To make the learning experience more interactive, the camp also featured games and quizzes. These activities were centered around topics such as distinguishing between healthy and unhealthy foods, understanding the food pyramid, and identifying the nutrients present in common foods. These interactive sessions were well-received by the students, helping to reinforce their knowledge in a fun and memorable way. In addition to these educational activities, a nutritional assessment was conducted for all the school children. This assessment provided valuable insights into the nutritional status of the students, helping to identify any potential deficiencies or areas for improvement.

As part of the event, refreshments were served to all the students, ensuring they had a healthy and nutritious snack to enjoy. This gesture further emphasized the importance of incorporating nutritious foods into their daily diet. At the conclusion of the camp, the puppet show kit used during the event was donated to the school management. This donation will enable the school to continue educating students on important health and nutrition topics through similar interactive presentations in the future. Overall, the camp was a successful initiative that effectively combined education, entertainment, and hands-on activities to promote the importance of nutrition among school children. The collaboration between the Department of Clinical Nutrition and Unnat Bharat Abhiyan was instrumental in making this event a meaningful contribution to National Nutrition Month.
