Outreach Program on Importance of Education to Rural Communities 24.01.2024 - THENMELPAKKAM

 

The department of Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering (EIE), in association with UBA SRM-IST, jointly organized an Outreach Program on Importance of Education to Rural Communities at Thenmelpakkam Village, near Chengelpet on 24.01.24 (Wednesday), on the occasion of International Education Day. This outreach aims to create an awareness among the tribal and downtrodden community about educating students.

            Mrs. T.Sumathi, Tamil Nadu State Rural Livelihoods Mission (TNSRLM)- Block mission manager (Kattankulathur Block) graced the session as the guest speaker. The speaker gave the audience a glimpse of all the schemes offered by government in order to promote their livelihood. The audience were given an opportunity to interact with the team regarding various schemes for educating them for an occupation.


            Dr.S.Sharanya and Mr.Sridhar.N.S delivered a short note on the activities offered in SRM for underprivileged community. The session happened to be an eye opener for the audience.

National Girl Child Day Programme 24.01.2024 - Kolathur

 

Adolescent age brings in lot of questions in every individual who step into it. The questions related to bodily growth and the internal changes. The changes which happen within a girl’s body needs more attention, but this is never addressed. To talk about Menstrual cycle is still considered a taboo. There are many who use a napkin or pad even without knowing how to use it.




On account of National Girl Child Day, the Internal Committee (IC) & Unnat Bharat Abhiyan of SRM IST, organised a program to educate girl children on ‘menstrual hygiene’ and girls’ safety. Sustainable Development Goals, SDG 3, 4, 5, and 6 aligns on the wellness, education, safety and clean sanitation as discussed among the school students on the topic Safety of Girls and Menstrual Hygiene.

Children in the age group of 12 or 13, who are in the adolescent stage and have attained puberty were the audience.

The event started with prayer song, followed by which Mr. Rajan, the Headmaster of PUMS, Chettipunniyam delivered the welcome address.

The first session was on Safety of Girl’s by Dr. S. Ramya.  She started by explaining to them about the names and logos that were on the banner. Students were briefed on how the UN’s SDGs gives importance to good health, quality education, gender equality and clean water and sanitation. The role of internal committee and UBA and the connect all had with National Girl Child Day was narrated.

Dr. Vidhyalakshmi briefed them in detail by showing them visual representation of the internal female genital organ and how the blood comes out. 

In the end there was a question session where students raised quite a few doubts like “why should we change the napkin? Should we take pills for stomach pain? Can we run during periods? etc. and the same was addressed by both the speakers.

Ms. Anju, UBA Associate delivered the vote of thanks by telling the students how blessed they were for having a group of people to educated them on issues which many will not talk in public.

Ms. Anbarasi, teacher from PUMS Kolathur, thanked SRM IC and UBA for the initiative taken to address the girl children at the right age and to talk on their bodily changes.

The event ended with the National Anthem.

Eat Right Challenge Awareness Programme - 19.01.2024

 

The Department of Food Process Engineering at SRMIST Kattankulathur conducted an outreach programme on Eat Right Challenge Awareness Programme for School students.    The outreach activity was conducted at Singaperumal Kovil Government Higher Secondary School along with Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, SRM IST l on 19th January 2024 from 2:30pm onwards.  

Approximately 200 enthusiastic school students were actively participated in a day filled with enlightening activities. The event, gracefully presided over by Head Mistress Mrs. Lalitha, featured a lineup activities including discussions on the Food Pyramid, simple Adulteration detection methods, FSSAI's Pink Book and a session on selecting the Right Processed Food.  The demonstration was given by 1st year M Tech (Food Safety and Quality Management and Food and Nutritional Biotechnology) students who flawlessly conducted these informative demonstrations followed by quiz.  

The winners were recognized with certificate and medals at end of the event by Head Mistress, Teachers, Social workers and SRM IST members.

Value education outreach programme on plastic recycling

 

The department of EIE in association with UBA cell and UHV cell jointly organized a Value education outreach on plastic recycling. The event was organized to create an awareness among school children on reusing and reducing plastic waste at home and society the event was attended by 200 children from SP Koil Govt.HSS. The chief guest was Dr.D.Jaya kumar from All India Human rights organization and Guest speaker was Dr.Jawahar from SRMIST (Asst.Director/Hostels) delivered the lecture on ways of reducing plastic waste. A quiz was conducted and gifts were distributed to the selected students. Students took pledge on plastic free Bhogi celebrations

Unnat Bharat Abhiyan-SRMIST signs MoU with SIRD for Achieving Localisation of Sustainable Development goals (LSDGs)

 SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) under its Unnat Bharat Abhiyan signed a memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with State Institute of Rural Development & panchayat Raj, TN (SIRD&PR).


Tamil Nadu State Institute of Rural Development (SIRD) join forces to accelerate progress towards the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 12 adopted villages. In a significant step towards localized sustainable development, this strategic partnership aims to empower rural communities and improve their quality of life through a collaborative approach to achieving the nine Localized Sustainable Development Goals (LSDGs) outlined by the Panchayat Raj department. Aligned with the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, both institutions are committed to the 17 SDGs. The nine LSDGs targeted under the MoU focus on

 

1.      Poverty free village and Enhanced livelihood

2.      Healthy Village

3.      Child-friendly Village

4.      Water Sufficient Village

5.      Clean and Green Village

6.      Village with Self-sufficient Infrastructure

7.      Socially Secured village

8.      Village with Good Governance

9.      Women Friendly Village

Leveraging its extensive experience in the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan program and direct engagement with village communities, SRMIST brings valuable expertise to the table. The institute has already adopted 12 villages in Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram districts and actively works towards improving their living standards.















The MoU signing ceremony was attended by Dr. P. Selvarajan, Director of SIRD, and Dr. Ponnusamy, Registrar of SRMIST in presence of Dr.V.Thirumurugan, Associate Director (CL) & Nodal officer of Unnat Bharat Abhiyan. Dr.M. Mathew Arumai, HOD Department of Social work delivered welcome address and also talked about the services done by UBA-SRMIST in the adopted villages. 20 students from MSW actively participated in the programme. This agreement signifies a mutual commitment to support village panchayats in achieving the LSDGs through collaborative efforts. “This partnership with SIRD marks a significant step in our journey towards sustainable development,” stated Dr.S.Ponnusamy Registrar SRMIST. “By combining our expertise and resources, we can empower rural communities and create a brighter future for all.” This partnership represents a true win-win situation," stated Dr. Selvarajan, Director of SIRD. "Both SRMIST gains valuable experience in grassroots development, while our villages receive invaluable expertise and resources to achieve their sustainable development goals. The MoU outlines a concrete action plan involving village-specific LSDG themes, faculty-student collaboration, and adherence to the RCI-IIT Madras guidelines. Each adopted village will receive dedicated attention for a year, ensuring measurable progress towards achieving the chosen LSDG. This initiative holds immense promise for the future of rural development in Tamil Nadu. By leveraging the combined expertise of SRMIST and SIRD, the program can empower local communities to take ownership of their development journey and build a brighter, more sustainable future for generations to come.
