Pledge against Single use Plastic

 I pledge to practice the 8 R’sRethink, Refuse, Reduce, Recycle, Repair, Re-gift, Recover, and Reuse. And stop using plastic meant for single use As a good citizen of my country and a responsible resident of the planet Earth,


I pledge to Refuse, Reduce, Recycle, Reuse, Repair, Re-gift, Recover and “Rethink plastic”, to the best of my efforts by doing the following:

 I shall say “NO” to single use plastic items (Straw, carry bags, cutlery etc.) 
 I shall always carry a cloth bag, reusable cutlery, straw and cup.
 NOT purchase fruits and vegetables wrapped in plastic films 
 Sensitize peers, friends and family about minimizing single use plastic 
 Sort my waste for recycling and disposal 
 Ask restaurants NOT to send plastic cutlery when ordering food online 
 Purchase usually what can be either recycled, reused, refilled or repaired 
 NOT accept gifts/ bouquets wrapped in plastics  Avoid sachets as much as possible















 


UBA- SRMIST Organizing cycle rally to create awareness about single use plastic

On 18.12.2021 (Saturday) Unnat Bharat Abhiyan of SRM University and Maraimalai Nagar Municipality jointly organized a one-time use plastic awareness bicycle rally event.


The rally was flagged off by Mrs. Lakshmi, Municipal Commissioner, Maraimalai Nagar and gave a special address to the participants.





The event was felicitated by the Director campus life  Dr. Leenus Martin.




The rally was presided  by Dr. V.Thirumurugan, Associate Director,Campus Life SRMIST.




 It was attended by university students, Faculties  and government middle school students, headmaster and teachers. The bicycle rally started from the SRM college campus and proceeded to the adopted village of Kalivandapattu (about 35 km) and returned to the university campus to raise awareness about the dangers of using plastic (one time use plastic carry bags) . 




A pledge was taken not to use plastics.

Entrepreneurship Development Training on Dairy Cattle Farming and Digital Marketing for Rural Communities - Jointly Organised by Dept. of Electronics and Communication Engineering, & Unnat Bharat Abhiyan SRMIST in association with State Institute of Rural Development & Panchayat Raj (SIRD & PR) Date: 24th & 26th November 2021 -Nattarasanpattu V

 


A three-day training workshop on “Entrepreneurship Development Training on Dairy Cattle Farming and Digital Marketing for Rural Communities” was jointly conducted by Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering SRM Institute of Science & Technology and Unnat Bharat Abhiyan in association with State Institute of Rural Development & Panchayat Raj (SIRD & PR) from 24th to 26thNovember 2021 at Nattarasanpattu village. More than 100 villagers participated.





Day – 1 (24/11/2021)

The inaugural was presided by Mr. Samuel Inbadurai, Director of SIRD & PR (Chengalpattu district). This training program was organised by Dr.V. Thirumurugan (Associate director of campus life and UBA nodal officer),Dr. T. Deepa (Associate professor, SRMIST), UBA faculty co-ordinators and student co-ordinators along with village panchayat president Mrs. Vasanthi Sambasivam and Mr. Sambasivam, village panchayat secretary Mr. Seetharaman and Nattarasanpattu village panchayat ward members.





After the inaugural, Mr. Samuel Inbadurai (Director of SIRD & PR) shared his insights on “Dairy Supply Chain Management”. Tamil Nadu Rural Transformation Project (TNRTP)’s district executive officer Mr. M. Dinakar Rajkumar enlighted people on how funding assistance can be provided for cattle and dairy management. Later in the afternoon, Dr. P. Gopu, assistant professor from PGRIAS (Kattupakkam) delivered his speech on different dairy cattle breeds available and cattle breeding management. Then, Dr. M. Vimalarani, ssociate professor from KVK (Kattupakkam) insisted people on the importance of value - added dairy products and how it can improve the economic sustainability.

Day – 2 (25/11/2021)


                On the second day of the training workshop, Dr. R. Murugeswari, associate professor from Institute of Animal Nutrition (Kattupakkam) trained the people on cattle farming techniques. The process of conversion of animal waste to manure and the various techniques were explained by              Dr. V. S. Mynavathi, assistant professor from the Institute of Animal Nutrition. She also insisted the benefits of using natural fertilizers and pesticides than the harmful effects of the artificial chemical compounds.

Day – 3 (26/11/2021)



The final day of the training program started with the interaction about the importance of finding a good marketing strategy to sell the quality products produced by the villagers. Dr. T. Deepa, associate professor from department of ECE, SRMIST explained the people on “what is digital marketing?” and “How to use digital marketing?”. She shared her ideas on the various digital marketing techniques and their benefits. Then she trained people on the “Rural Kart” mobile application developed by the faculty and ECE students of SRMIST. The rural kart application is an entrepreneurship interface between the producers and the customers to sell their quality products.

The workshop ended with a valedictory function presided by the village panchayat president, panchayat secretary and ward members. They thanked the SRMIST, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan and SIRD& PR for providing such a wonderful training program. They also insisted the people to follow the ideas and insights gained from the training and to improve the economic, environmental and social stability of the Nattarasanpattu village.

Through this training, the village people can know how dairy supply chain management operates and plan their resources accordingly to produce high quality dairy products and at the same time more profit. Apart from dairy cattle breeding management, training was provided on preparation of value-added dairy products and manure from cattle wastes. Finally, they were trained on using digital marketing techniques to get more profits. With the help of the certificate provided through this training, the village people together can approach to avail the schemes and facilities provided by the government. After this workshop, the people were very eager and determined to improve their livelihood in a better manner.

EVENT REPORT

Our top management officials, Chancellor, Pro-Chancellors, Vice-Chancellor, The Registrar and Dean (College of Engineering and Technology) are always showing keen interest in activities on improving and promoting the living standards of society. We, SRMIST, Kattankulathur Campus, adopted eight villages in Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram Districts to uplift the living standards of the rural community.

This national-level Smart e-Hackathon – Sustainable Rural Development (SH-SRD 2021) is organized by UBA SRMIST in association with UBA RCI IIT Madras. The Conveners and co-conveners are as follows.

The main aim of the Hackathon is to cultivate young minds to provide innovative solutions to rural development on broad themes like renewable energy, water management, and waste management. The students of arts, science and engineering and technology are eligible to apply for this Hackathon. The team size is five students and there should be at least one female student in each team.

The specific themes of SH-SRD 2021 are to design affordable solar cookers for rural households to avoid pollution of conventional fuels and other inefficient cooking methods. The next one is to propose ideas to treat wastewater in rural applications. The final sub-theme is to provide Agri-tech solutions for stubble management. Nationwide enthusiastic participation has been witnessed with 120 submissions to the Hackathon. After scrutinizing submitted proposals for completeness and correctness, 105 teams were selected for the competition. The submissions are as follows.

·         Renewable Energy: 30 Teams

·         Water Management: 30 Teams

·         Waste Management: 45 Teams

There are three levels of selection and are provided below.

Level-1: Two experts in the fields shortlisted 50% of teams for the second-level competitions for online presentations of their ideas. This is done based on ranking all the proposals in each theme, and the top 50% are selected.

Level-2: From the three verticals, Renewable Energy, Water and Waste Management, 15 to 20 teams have participated in the second round on 22.10.2021 from 9.00 AM to 5.00 PM through online presentation to the two judges. The top 5-6 teams are selected for the final selection.

Level-3: The selected top 5-6 teams from Level-2 are attended the Grand Final Hackathon. The eminent field experts from IIT Madras and IIT Tirupati selected three top-ranked in each vertical.

How the students show interest in sustainable rural development technologies ensures the concrete hope that the younger generation will provide innovative solutions to the rural community and development of the nation. 

"My idea of village swaraj is that it is a complete republic, independent of its neighbours for its own vital wants, and yet interdependent for many others in which dependence is a necessity”.  Mahatma Gandhiji says this. We strongly believe the youngsters will put their efforts to make true of Mahatma’s dreams on village development as it’s the backbone of our country.

SRMIST students and staff sowed 5,000 palm seeds in Kadampur lakes near Kalivandapattu village, Chengalpattu district.

 SRMIST students and staff sowed 5,000 palm seeds in Kadampur lakes near Kalivandapattu village, Chengalpattu district. This was done as part of the Institute's Unnat Bharat Abhiyan through the Department of Business Administration, New Generation Foundation and Bharathidasan Green Foundation.










The event was inaugurated by Dr. V. Thirumurugan Associate Director (Campus Life) in the presence of Dr. Ponniah V.M Dean (School of Management). Mr. Venkata Sastry Director (Career Center) felicitated the staff & students for their contributions. Mr. Ramesh Kannan participated on behalf of the New Generation Foundation.




The event was attended by many students, teachers and the general public. The event was organised by Mr.Pradeep S, Mr.Meghavannan & Mr.Rajasekar.

SRMIST- UBA observed the Swachhata Pakhwada 2021

 The theme of this Swachhata Pakhwada is “Clean India, Green India, Yeh Hai Mera Dream India”.

SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur is holding Swachhata Pakhwada 2021, a fortnight-long program observed to ensure mass participation of citizens in Swachhata activities. The inauguration for the event was held on 1st September virtually. About 60 members, including Deans, Directors, faculty members and students, participated in this initiative.  

Dr. P. Supraja, from Swatchhata organizing team gave a short note on the Institute’s action plan towards Swachhata Pakhwada 2021. The welcome address was delivered by Dr. T. Rajasekaran, professor from Mechanical Engineering and NSS Coordinator of SRMIST. Registrar of SRMIST Dr. S. Ponnusamy gave the presidential address and shared valuable information about the Swachhata initiative in the campus. Director (IHM) Dr. D. Antony Ashok Kumar shared his own experience and importance of swatch movement in the felicitation note.

Dr. V. M. Gayathri from Swatchhata organizing team delivered the pledge to devote towards 'Swachhata' of our motherland and all the dignitaries and participants have taken an oath for the same. Swachhata Pakhwada 2021, as a part of Swachh Bharat Abhiayan launched by Government of India, is a fortnight-long program observed to ensure mass participation of citizens in Swachhata activities and to transform Swachh Bharat into a citizen’s movement. MHRD has directed all educational institutions to take part in Swachhata Pakhwada 2021 and to set the tone and pace for the Swachhata movement in the country.

UBA-SRMIST observed International Beach Cleanup Day

International Beach Cleanup Day was observed by the National Building Research Center, National Center for Coastal Research Chennai, and SRMIST-Unnat Bharat Abhiyan cleaned up the Kovalam beach. About 150 students and professors joined the clean-up drive held at Kovalam beach. Dr. V. Thirumurugan, Associate Director (Campus Life) SRMIST and Nodal officer Unnat Bharat Abhiyan-SRMIST inaugurated the event under the chairmanship of Dr. Prabhakar Misra, Researcher, Indian Coastal Research Center. 

 









The team went on a campaign march from the beach in Kovalam panchayat and ended at the Kovalam bus stand to raise awareness of cleanliness. They were joined by villagers, who also raised awareness on the prevention of the use of plastic, maintain environmental hygiene, and protect the cleanliness of the beach.
