UBA-SRMIST hosts virtual webinar on NEP 2020

SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur under its Unnat Bharath Abhiyan (UBA) flagship organized a webinar on New Education Policy 2020 on 21 September 2020. Vice Chancellor of SRMIST Dr.Sandeep Sancheti delivered the keynote address on the new education policy. Over 1000 students, faculty members, UBA-SRMIST adopted villages, and other academia and industry have participated in this sensitized program.


Dr. V. Thirumurugan, Nodal Officer, UBA-SRMIST, and the Associate Director (campus life) welcomed all, and Dr.R.Senthil, Associate Professor, Mechanical narrated the profile details of the speaker Dr.Sandeep Sancheti.

In his speech Dr.Sandeep Sancheti explained all the features of the new education policy, it’s outcome, and how it benefits the country as a whole. He briefed the overarching vision and comprehensive framework of NEP 2020 for both school and higher education. Further, he detailed the impact of NEP2020 as a new regulator proposed for higher education with separate verticals for regulation, standard-setting, accreditation, and funding.


He said that the NEP2020 would absorb arts and science, technical and teacher knowledge into its fold, replace several existing regulatory bodies, and ensure a level playing field for public and private players.
He added this new educational policy is mainly student-centric and highly flexible. For students, the most meaningful change may be introducing four-year undergraduate degrees, with options for entry and exit at various stages, a credit transfer system, and abolishing the M Phil program.


He insisted that the target for policy to transform the education system is about 15-20 years. The National Testing Agency will introduce a pilot version of the common entrance test, used for admission to all Institute of Eminences (IoEs) and central universities in 2021. Some Indian Institutes of Technology are developing the Academic Credit Bank's technical structure, which will also be established and become applicable to all new students joining central universities next year.



The keynote address mainly focused on the roadmap to achieve the GER 50% in the next 15 years. The resource person discussed the challenges of implementation aspects and the merits of the NEP 2020.
A fruitful query clearing session monitored by Dr.P.Vijayakumar, Associate Professor. ECE started at 3 pm and the speaker politely and confidently answered all the questions of the participants with correct essential information. Dr.T.Deepa, Associate Professor, ECE  has coordinated the whole event with the support of all UBA team members. Dr.Samuel Jacob, Assistant Professor Bio-Tech arranged for the distribution of e-certificates to all the participants of this event.

SRMIST-UBA has planned a massive tree plantation drive on the eve of Engineer's Day

 Kanchipuram District Public Works department Chief executive  Engineer lauded the SRM Group for being a role model among the universities which have been adopting villages in promoting rural development under the guidance of state and central  governments under UBA.



Unnath Bharat Abhiyan is a flagship program developed by the Central Government with the prime objective of rural development. The Central Government makes the best private universities in the country to  function in various ways  for the integrated rural development and technological interventions in the villages by involving the students/ faculties.

Under this project, SRM Institute of Science and Technology has  adopted 8 villages Viz. Orathur, Nattarasanpattu, Chettipuniyam, Anjur, Pattaravakkam, Kolathur, thenmelpakkam,chettipunniyam for making  improvement of  basic facilities needed for the people in those villages, to plant trees to protect the environment,and to  make basic  developments through  technological interventions.

As a part of this mission SRMIST has planned a massive tree plantation drive on the eve of Engineer's Day and 159 th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna  Visvesvaraya,the stalwart of Indian engineers and  commenced the planation of 200 saplings at Orathur village today(15.09.2020) 

Mr.R. Ramesh, Chief executive Engineer, Lower Palar basin, Kanchipuram District, NDS.Subhash, Former Chairman, Orathur Grama Panchayat, Dr.D. Anthony Ashok Kumar, Director, College of SRM Restaurant Management, Dr. V.Thirumurugan, Nodal Officer, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan,Associate Director campus life and the villagers took part in the event.


Speaking on the occasion, Chief executive Engineer R.Ramesh appreciated the  developments  being implemented by private companies under such  schemes without any  expectation from  the government and  the villagers also  should welcome it .He also praised  that  SRM University has been set as   a good example under  this Unnat Bharat Abhiyan project.

The event was attended by many villagers , SRM Unnath Bharat Abhiyan officers and Public Works Department officials.

Swachh Campus -SRMIST,KTR Campus

 Campus Hostel: SRM IST has 27 hostels with modernized kitchens, toilets, & RO water facilities Implementation of SMART Technology at SRMIST: 

1. Waste Disposal: Institute generated waste from kitchen and hostel, is source segregated as wet and dry waste and send to a solid waste management yard for segregation in partnered with NGO “Hand in Hand” 

2. Recycling of Waste Water: 3 STP plants / 7 MLD capacity/plant at 3 locations recycles 100% of waste water producing 7 million l/day recycled water is used for toilet flushes, gardening, recharging groundwater, and the excess water is stored in a lagoon inside the campus to be used during water scarcity. 

3. Food Waste Recycling for Bio Gas production: The food waste generated in the hostel where the inmates are around 12000 is sent to 5 different bio gas plants /each 90m3 capacity and the bio gas generated is used in the hostel mess for cooking purpose. Recently a bio-methanation plant is installed which is capable of replacing 90 kg of LPG gas per day. 

4. Hostel Kitchen Facilities SRMIST hostel has modernized kitchen with hi-tech facilities like chimney, solar steam cooking and large dining area with granite flooring sufficient tables and chairs cleaned three times a day. RO Plants located in various places provides 4 lakhs liters RO drinking water /day to be used in hostels and academic places for students and faculties.

 5. Campus greenery: SRMIST has 30 percent greenery exhibited in a football turf measuring 3.5 acres with sprinkler facilities. 

 6. Solar Power Generation 1MW capacity Solar panels are the major renewable energy source with grid connection to the main power supply at SRMIST. Installation of Solar water heaters in all hostels & solar steam cooking system in mess block has saved our LPG gas use. Solar Steam Cooking System with Concentrated Solar Technology has 37 Nos of scheffler dish concentrators of each 16 m2 area. The system is designed to deliver 1500 kg of steam per day (max.) with temperatures up to 140oC. 

 7. Unnat Bharat Abhiyan - Adoption of Villages Through Unnat Bharat Abhiyan scheme SRMIST has adopted five villages, (Orathur, Nattarasanpattu - Kundrathur Block, Thenmelpakkam, Anjur, Pattaravakkam – Kattankulathur Block, Kancheepuram District) and about 400 to 500 households / village. About 2,500 households have been sensitized vaious sustainable Development goals like clean environment, clean drinking water, Ban plastic etc. Residents were also educated on waste disposal. SRMIST received UBA 2.0 funds for development & customization of technology for the following projects
 • Versatile Anaerobic reactor for households to yield biogas utilizing waste - for Orathur Village 
• End-To-End integrated Rationing system for Distribution of Provisions -for Anjur Village
 • Reverse osmosis plant for rural water Treatment –for Orathur village 

SRM IST Students conducted surveys in the village. Supplied Electronics kits to the Science Lab of Government High School, Anjur, Electrical faults in the school buildings were rectified and the drinking water pump was serviced. Supplied Desk/Benches to Thenmelpakkam Panchayat Union Elementary School. 

 SRMIST has been the active Organization partner with IIT, Bombay for Gandhi Global Solar Yatra – Student Solar Ambassador Workshop 2019 to be launched globally on 02.10.2019.
